About the College

Welcome from the Foundation Director

Welcome to the Australian College of Social Work. I hope that you enjoy browsing through the material which explains how to become a member of the College and its benefits . Of course in the first years of the College, we are still finding our way and the College in five years time will be a very different body to the inaugural, virtual ACSW of 2011. Nevertheless we have your present and future interests in our sights: We are still working out our program for 2011/12 and we hope to post it on the website shortly.

I would also like to express an extra special welcome to social workers practising outside capital cities. The College is going to be a great resource for you and we have thought of you particularly in the way we are designing our program.

The College provides an opportunity to share in a collegial way, the knowledge, skills and experience that is fundamental to advanced social work practice, not only in the important specialties but also in our unique grasp of the generic. In working with people in other fields, as I do continuously, I have noticed that the thing that non social workers appreciate above all is firstly, our inclusive thinking and secondly, good judgement. How can we define both ?

Many of us who have been in social work for a lengthy period think that the Australian College of Social Work is long overdue. So I hope you will be able to join us in the exciting and challenging phase, whilst we are still absorbing new ideas and setting directions. Over the next couple of years I also look forward to meeting our members and working on their ideas.
