May 2010

Dear [FirstName],

I The Federal Budget will be released next week, and I’ve been invited to the Department of Health and Ageing ‘Lock Up’, which means I’ll be able to read the full papers before they are publically released. Look out for the AASW response to the Federal Budget on Wednesday.

Code of Ethics Review - Tell us what you think

The Code of Ethics Review is now underway and we would love to hear from you.

The Code of Ethics articulates the core values and principles of the social work profession and provides a guide to ethical social work practice. To ensure that the Code of Ethics remains relevant to the profession, the AASW is undertaking a comprehensive review of the Code. It was last thoroughly reviewed in 1999.

AASW supports the ASU Federal Wage Case – how you can take part

• Do you want to be part of making history?
• Can you call on the Government to “Pay Up – No More Lip Service to Equal Pay”?
• Do you agree that Community Sector workers are undervalued and underpaid and not properly respected?

If your answer is Yes, then you need to be at the day of action in most capital cities on June 10. Join tens of thousands of others throughout Australia calling on the Government to fund the outcome of the Equal Pay test case to make equal pay a reality.

The ASU Equal Pay Case will argue that low wages in a feminised industry like the community sector be brought into line with the pay rates in a similar male dominated industry. The fact is that Community Workers across Australia deserve pay rises in the realms of thirty-percent and this case will prove that fact. But, without the government committing to funding the outcome of the case this case, their support, is simply lip service to equal pay.

CLICK here to find the rally details in your capital city. A couple of easy things you can do to support the campaign:

  1. Come to the rally on June 10! Mark it in your calendar today
  2. Forward this email to all of your colleagues, friends, families and supporters and ask them to join you on June 10
  3. Get hold of flyers and posters to promote the day of action in your workplace and community
  4. Show your support by sending a virtual “kiss” to Julia Gillard.

AASW member’s mental health blog

One of our members has launched a blog designed to raise awareness of mental health recovery and hopefully inspire others with mental health problems to pursue their dreams. Basically, his blog is a forum to demonstrate his own recovery, introduce information on recovery planning, and effectively model that asking for help and hard work are key in the recovery process.

Here are links to the related press release, Keith’s blog and personal website; where more and more information will be added as it is addressed on the blog.

Keith has asked me to let people know about his work, which I’m delighted to do.

IFSW Conference - Australia- Aotearoa New Zealand Breakfast

I know several of you are attending the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) Conference in Hong Kong next month. It’s often hard to connect with colleagues in large international conferences, so the AASW and our Aotearoa-New Zealand sister organisation (ANZASW) have decided to hold 'Antipodean Munchies’ on 11 June 2010 7.30 – 8.30am.

The venue will be confirmed in Hong Kong and a notice to this affect will be available at the IFSW stall.

Please let me know by email before you travel to Hong Kong if you would like to attend.

Kind regards
Kandie
