AASW

Dear [FirstName],

This is the July edition of the monthly AASW e-bulletin.

Hunter Branch anniversary

The Hunter Branch is celebrating their 30th anniversary with a dinner on August 13. The Branch is particular keen to contact former members who have moved to another branch, so if you would like to attend, please do let them know, and don’t worry that the RSVP date is already upon us.

Human rights consultation submission

The AASW put in a submission to the National Human Rights Consultation, which has been holding inquiries into the possible need for better protection of human rights in Australia. You can read our submission here. As social workers are often working in the delivery of people's rights, we are well placed to see when rights need better protection.

National health practitioners registration and accreditation scheme

We recently made a submission to the national health practitioners registration and accreditation scheme. As reported in the last edition of the Bulletin, this is simply bringing together the registration schemes for those professions currently registered at State / Territory level, and so we are not part of the scheme. Nevertheless we wanted to be on the record about the need for social work to be registered in the future.

Senate Select Committee on Regional and Remote Indigenous Communities update

As I reported last month, I gave evidence to the Senate Select Committee on Regional and Remote Indigenous Communities in June. The transcript of that session is now available here, and we will shortly be lodging an update to our submission from 2008.

How membership renewal is going (and a gentle reminder)

As you’ll know, this is the first time we’ve asked members to renew their membership online. I’m really pleased to report that almost all of those who have renewed (4000) have managed to renew without assistance from the staff. If you haven’t found the time to renew yet, please do so as soon as possible and do call the office on 02 6270 7200 or 1800 630 124 if you need assistance.

Allied Health Professions conference

The AASW is a member of the Allied Health Professions Association, and they are running the National Allied Health conference in Canberra in October. Early bird registrations close at the end of this month, so if you are considering attending, please do register soon through their website.

Vacancy on the National Ethics Panel

There is a vacancy on the National Ethics Panel (NEP). The NEP is a Board appointed panel with responsibility for the oversight and implementation of the AASW Ethics Complaints Management Process. The NEP enables the AASW to manage ethics complaints in a transparent and fair manner. If you would like to find out more about the work of the Panel, and if you are interested in joining it, please contact Kym Daly. To find out more about the position and how to apply please see here.

Position available at the AASW

The AASW is reviewing the Code of Ethics, and is looking for a highly skilled Project Officer to be involved in leading this review. The position is part time and is based in the national office in Melbourne. If you would like to know more, please have a look at the position description.
