Daylight Saving Time opening hours – National Office

During daylight saving the National office (Canberra) will be open until 6.30pm AEDT Monday-Thursday. This is to allow members in Queensland, NT and WA who do not have daylight saving to contact us more easily. My thanks to the staff who have agreed to the flexible working hours to make this extension of hours possible.
You can contact the national office on 02 6270 7200 or 1800 630 124 (members line).

Australian Social Work

Your journal, Australian Social Work will publish a special issue on Australian Indigenous Social Work and Social Policy in 2011. We are calling for papers from Indigenous researchers, practitioners and policy makers and non-Indigenous social workers or researchers who work in this area. The deadline for submissions is February 2010. For more information see here.

Butterfly Foundation for Eating Disorders

The Butterfly Foundation is currently looking for people 25 years or under, living in Sydney to participate in one of the National Eating Disorder Collaboration’s consultation sessions in the coming weeks. For more information see here.
You can also ask young people to complete the online survey.

The AASW is a partner of the Butterfly Foundation, and encourages members to assist with their research.

CPE Review

The AASW has recently released a discussion paper on the review of the Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Program, and is seeking comments from members by December 14. A summary of the paper is available and members can also find a link to the full review here.

English Language Requirements

In response to concerns raised by international social work students over assessment changes for skilled migration, the AASW Board recently approved changes to policy on English language requirements. You can find out more here as well as links to the full documents.

Indigenous Communities

The Submission to the Senate Select Committee on Regional and Remote Indigenous Communities has now been delivered. The submission is a follow up to the Senate Select Committee hearing I presented to in June.

Association Staff

I regret to announce the resignation of Mr Peter Bayliss who has been our business manager for the past 18 months. Peter has been a great asset to the Association, revamping financial systems and assisting the implementation of the new website to enable online payments of membership fees. We will all miss him and wish him the best in his new role with ArtsACT.

Workcover NSW

I’ve met recently with senior officials at Workcover NSW to try to get social work included as one of the professions that workers can be referred to under the scheme. I’ve also asked the State Minister for a meeting about this issue. In the meeting I suggested that Accredited Mental Health Social Workers are qualified to provide a high level of services under Workcover. I’ll be in touch with you all when we know if we have been successful.

The National office regularly works on State / Territory issues like this which affect members, so if there is something that you think requires our support please contact the public affairs team.

Kind regards
Kandie
