Opinion: Aboriginal children need loving, safe and culturally appropriate homes

AASW National President Christine Craik and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Board representative Linda Ford co-authored an opinion piece for the ABC on Indigenous children being housed within Indigenous families, if they require out-of-home care.

Read the full opinion piece on the ABC website.

Professional identification as a social worker

It is important to identify yourself correctly as a social worker and to avoid using terms which have specific meaning under legislation. For instance, incorrectly identifying yourself as a "practitioner" who is providing health services could contravene certain Acts which together provide a National Law.

There have been instances where social workers have identified themselves in marketing materials as a "mental health practitioner", or other words to that effect, and some social workers have been prosecuted for having identified themselves incorrectly as psychologists, when they are not listed as registered as a psychologist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

You can make use of the AASW's credentialing system to reflect your recognised expertise and elevate your professional credibility as a social worker. The AASW trademarks contain the correct wording. See our website for more information about AASW Collective Trademarks.
