AASW Networks and Projects - AHPA and MHA Day of Advocacy on Mental Health

 

Allied Health Professionals Australia (AHPA) : The Social Policy and Advocacy team work closely with AHPA and the professional associations that make up the Alliance, including participating on a number of working groups.

Recently Debra Parnell, Manager Social Policy and Advocacy, attended an AHPA forum in Canberra, at which a number of meetings were scheduled with key Department of Health representatives, and MPs and their advisors, including:

  • Dr Alison Morehead, First Assistant Secretary Primary Care and Mental Health
  • Louise Riley, Director Primary Care, Dental & Palliative Care
  • Tony Zappia, Shadow Minister for Medicare
  • Trent Tolra, Senior Advisor for Disability for Paul Fletcher, Minister for Social Services.
  • Julie Collins, Shadow Minister for Aged Care and Mental Health

These meetings provided the opportunity to advocate for the allied health professions in relation to

  • The Medicare Review and future developments under MBS;
  • Workforce issues under NDIS;
  • PHN commissioning processes and impact on access to allied health services and providers;
  • Aged care and mental health inquiries.

MHA Day of Advocacy on Mental Health

AASW CEO, Cindy Smith and Debra Parnell, Manager, Social Policy & Advocacy, recently attended Mental Health Australia’s (MHA) Member Policy Forum and Day of Advocacy at Parliament House in Canberra.

It provided the opportunity to hear from key Ministers and Shadow Ministers on mental health policy and developments, and meet with other MPs and Senators on MHA key advocacy issues, including

  • Paul Fletcher, Minister for Families and Social Services
  • Julie Collins, Shadow Minister for Mental Health and Ageing
  • Deborah O’Neill, Shadow Assistant Minister for Mental Health
  • Sarah Henderson, Assistant Minister for Social Services
