Social policy & advocacy

AASW in the media

RUOK Day tomorrow, 14 September, is a reminder to normalise and better respond to the ongoing mental health needs faced by communities. Read our media release. CEO Cindy Smith has been interviewed by radio news across the country.

Senate quotes AASW submissions

Two of the Senate legislative review committees to which the AASW recently made submissions have released their final reports. The Better Targeting Student Payments Bill and Welfare Reform Bill reports both quote the AASW. However, despite our objections to each, the reports recommend that each Bill be passed.

The Justice Project

The Law Council has announced it is conducting a comprehensive national review called The Justice Project, which will explore the impediments to justice in Australia and focus on people facing significant social and economic disadvantage. Several discussion papers have been released on the experience of particular groups. If you've had difficulty accessing the justice system and would like to contribute to the AASW's submission, email the social policy team by 18 September.

Medicare Benefits Schedule review

The AASW has been part of the Medicare Benefits Schedule review since its announcement in April 2015, including making a submission and attending numerous consultation forums. The focus of our advocacy has been on achieving pay parity. Learn more about the review and how you can get involved on the Medicare Benefits Schedule review web page.
