Social policy and advocacy

Working with refugees and asylum seekers?

The AASW is developing a Refugee and Asylum Seeker Scope of Social Work Practice document. We've prepared a draft and are now looking for members who would like to comment and contribute to its development. If you'd like to see the draft, please email Len Baglow

AASW opposes removal of student payments

The AASW has opposed the removal of the Pensioner Education Supplement (PES) and the Education Entry Payment (EEP) in its submission to the Senate Community Affairs Legislation Committee about the SSLA Budget Repair Bill 2015. Our submission uses valuable data collected last year from the National Study of Social Work Students and highlights the difficulties of 56 students who receive the Disability Support Pension and may potentially lose the support provided by the PES and EEP. We will upload the submission to the AASW website as soon as we have the Senate's permission.

Veterans' Affairs allied health review

The Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) is undertaking a review of its allied health arrangements and the AASW has been invited to contribute. Our submission will relate to issues such as the critical role social workers play in the provision of services for veterans; the scope of social work practice in this area, particularly in relation to mental health and care coordination, and pay parity for comparable services. View the terms of reference for the review. If you are a DVA service provider, we would like your comments by this Friday 15 January via email to socialpolicy@aasw.asn.au
