Federal election

The AASW is getting ready for the federal election.

We are preparing briefings on crucial election issues and developing resources for members who are keen to approach their local member. Look out for the resources and briefings on our special election web page which we will publish soon.

Mental health reform

Last week the AASW attended the Mental Health Australia (MHA) Member Policy Forum and a meeting of the Mental Health Reform Stakeholder Group (a Government advisory group) which is part of the extensive mental health sector reform taking place over the next three to five years.

The key areas of reform are:

  1. Primary Health Networks will take a crucial role in MH service delivery
  2. The first consultation draft of the Fifth National Mental Health Plan is about to be released, and
  3. The National Disability Insurance Scheme which will to take a large role in the delivery of community based mental health support services to people with a serious psychosocial disability.

Visit our Mental health reform 2016 web page, which includes an  NDIS Mental Health Network update

Fifth National Mental Health Plan: Seeking your expertise

Members who are knowledgeable and experienced in this field are invited to send a brief description of their expertise and contact details to the AASW via email. Your offer of assistance will be used to help inform our response to the first draft of this plan.

NDIS: New local area coordinator (LAC) providers

The NDIA has awarded the first NDIS LAC tender contracts to three Victorian NGOs: The Brotherhood of St Lawrence in north eastern Melbourne, La Trobe Community Health Services in Central Highlands and Intereach in Loddon. Local Area Coordination services are compatible with social work skills so social workers interested in a career in disability should watch this latest development in the NDIS rollout and subscribe to the NDIS e-newsletter. More information about the role of LACS can be found on the NDIS website.
