Federal election

The AASW has published a federal election web page to keep members up-to-date with our election issues and to provide you with resources to help you actively engage in the election process.

The web page will continue to grow and change between now and the election. Feedback is welcome via an email to the Social Policy team

Indefinite detention submission

The AASW has made a submission to the Senate Inquiry into Indefinite Detention of People with Cognitive and Psychiatric impairment in Australia. The submission was based on the input from a number of social workers in the field, including Jamie O'Donahoo and Janette Graetz Simmonds, authors of the recent article, Forensic Patients and Forensic Mental Health in Victoria: Legal Context, Clinical Pathways, and Practice Challenges that was published in the latest edition of Australian Social Work. We will upload the full Senate submission to our website as soon as we have permission.

Low levels of allowances and student payments

The AASW has written a letter to the Hon. Christian Porter MP about the low levels of Newstart Allowance, Youth Allowance, Austudy and Abstudy. It is part of our ongoing campaign to increase these payments. As well as the letter, we have prepared an allowances briefing paper which is also published on our new federal election page.

Slow resettlement of refugees following the Syrian crisis

Many members have expressed concern about the slow resettlement of the extra 12,000 Syrian and Iraqi refugees announced by the Government last year. Read the AASW letter to the Hon. Peter Dutton MP which provides a good synopsis of the issue.

Scope of Practice: ADF, veterans and their families

The AASW is currently preparing a scope of social work practice document for Australian Defence Force (ADF) service members, veterans and their families. If you would like to comment on this document, please email the Social Policy team and we will send you the draft.

Scope of Practice: Leadership and management

The AASW has begun preparing a scope of social work practice document on leadership and management. If you would like to contribute, let us know by sending an email to the Social Policy team

Research opportunities

Clinical utility of demoralisation diagnosis: Survey

Demoralisation is an expression of lowered morale, reduced optimism and poor coping which develops as a result of illness and becomes associated with loss of hope, meaning and purpose in life. Social workers are invited to participate in Monash University’s 15 -20 minute online survey which is seeking your perspective about the utility of demoralisation as a diagnostic category.

The survey will ask you to read 10 patient vignettes and, for each, select the most appropriate diagnosis and management plan. All survey responses will be anonymous and confidential.

Find out more about this and other research participation opportunities on the AASW website.
