Contribute to Social Work Focus

We have extended the deadline for the contributions for the winter issue of Social Work Focus to 23 May. We are seeking interesting and informative stories about social work and leadership and management.

Your article can be about a personal professional journey, a research undertaking or discovery or a career achievement, innovative practice or professional development and client journey.

As long as it meets the AASW's publications contributions guide, we will consider it.

Social policy and advocacy

Federal election

Have you visited the AASW's federal election web page yet? It's designed to keep you up-to-date with our election issues and  provide you with resources to help you actively engage in the election process.

The web page will continue to grow and change between now and the election. Feedback is welcome via an email to the Social Policy team

2016–17 Budget

After last night's budget, the AASW issued a media release which decried the Turnbull government's choice to leave young people and people seeking employment in poverty rather than increase the Youth, Newstart and Abstudy allowances. Due to the differences in indexation, the value of Newstart has fallen by a third since 1997 in comparison to the aged pension. Together with the Youth and Abstudy allowances, Newstart is now just 55 per cent of the aged pension.

Aged care workforce

The AASW gave evidence to the Australian Government's Senate inquiry into the future of Australia’s aged care sector workforce.

We advocated for the role of social work, arguing that older Australians need to have access to skilled and knowledgeable professionals who can provide support for their psychosocial needs, including mental health, relationship issues, grief and loss, family violence and elder abuse. Ethics and practice consultation service

The AASW's Ethics and Practice Standards Consultation Service is free for members and others (such as employers of AASW members) to discuss and process ethical dilemmas and ethical practice issues. Our staff can provide both verbal and written information and assist in linking ethical and best practice decision making to the AASW's Code of Ethics, Practice Standards and broader ethical and practice theories.

Research opportunities

Gain CPD hours by participating in research

Did you know that taking part in research can be recorded as CPD hours for Category 3 – Professional Identity? There are currently four AASW-approved research projects for members to participate in.

If you are recruiting participants for research that is relevant to social workers and social work practice, find out more about the AASW's approval process and the documentation we require that enables you to promote your research to members.
