Curtin University is inviting managers and supervisors of early career social workers in the health sector to complete a 15 minute online questionnaire by 30 June 2016.

The survey is part of a project that is exploring the experiences of social workers in their first year of practice and the views of those who supervise them.

When you've completed the survey, you can participate in a follow-up interview. Find out more about this and other research participation opportunities on the AASW website.

Social policy and advocacy

Federal election

To assist members who want to speak to their local MPs or candidates we have released a briefing paper, Improving resettlement policies for refugees and asylum seekers, among the resources on our Federal election web page. Please send an email to the AASW social policy and advocacy team about any contact that you have with candidates and their response.

DVA and VVCS advocacy

In addition to the AASW making a detailed submission to the Department of Veterans Affairs' allied health review, we have had clinical expert representatives appointed to both the ‘Mental Health’ and ‘Other Clinical’ working groups which are providing advice to the department.

The AASW is also strongly advocating that Accredited Mental Health Social Workers (AMHSW) provide 90 minute exposure therapy sessions funded under the Veterans and Veterans' Families Counselling Service (VVCS). For more information visit the AASW DVA web page

ADF Scope of Practice

When practicing in the military setting, social workers draw on a broad range of biological, psychological, life course and social theories to form their assessments and interventions, and evaluate their practice. Social work assessments range from targeted and brief specific-needs analyses to comprehensive holistic psychosocial and risk assessments of  social and psychological needs, strengths and stressors. Read our new Australian Defence Force service members, veterans and their families scope of social work practice document.

Surrogacy inquiry report

The Australian Government’s inquiry into international and domestic surrogacy has tabled its final report. It cites the AASW’s submission and oral evidence and recommends that commercial surrogacy remain illegal in Australia and that the best interest of the child be of paramount importance.
