Trauma and mental ill-health are increasingly prevalent in Australia’s refugee and culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities, resulting from experiences such as war, separation from family, resettlement and the migration process.
Mental ill-health tends to start presenting in adolescence, yet CALD young people often face barriers to accessing the mental health support they need. This means young people in these communities are more likely to present to services when their mental health symptoms are severe, requiring acute responses such as inpatient care.
Culturally informed and culturally safe practices are necessary for social workers to improve mental health treatment and outcomes for CALD youth.
This webinar discusses the unique lived experiences of CALD young people in Australia, before exploring the importance of self-reflection in identifying and addressing bias in social work practice.
Additionally, evidence-based frameworks and practice strategies will be presented and analysed, with specific focus on their use in supporting CALD youth and their families.
"Great PD and very helpful resources presented and applied to be able to use in my work" – webinar participant. June 2022.
Who should register? Graduate and emerging social workers working in youth mental health or working with CALD youth
