We are delighted to have Dr Jessica Russ-Smith (she/her) present on Sovereign research and methodologies: Ethics as embodied practice.
Dr Jessica Russ-Smith (she/her) is a Wiradyuri Wambuul woman and distinguished Social Work Leader, Senior Lecturer, Academic Developer for First Peoples Curriculum at Australian Catholic University, and Non-Executive Board Director for the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) and advisor for prominent organisations such as Speech Pathology Australian.
As a two-time University Medallist and esteemed First Nations Social Worker and researcher, she offers a profound expertise in higher education, Social Work practice and research, alongside a deep understanding of First Nations sovereignty. Her research and teaching relates to First Nations sovereignty, embodying sovereignty, decolonisation, decolonising and disrupting whiteness in social work and higher education, First Nations social work, ethics, critical disability studies, activism, working with First Nations children and young people, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and ethics, and experiences of First Nations researchers.
Dr Russ-Smith’s dedication lies in transforming the Social Work profession, advancing First Nations and Social Work scholarship, and cultivating highly ethical and anti-racist educational and research environments.

The ACT Research and Social Work Practice Group exists to provide networking and professional development opportunities for social workers, social work students and allied health colleagues, who have an interest in social work research. Our purpose is to grow the interest, skills and capacity of social workers to undertake research, and to foster connections between practitioners, academics, students and key organisations. People with any level of research experience are welcome, and both members and non-members of AASW.
