Becoming a supervisor can be a daunting next step in your social work career. This introductory course will prepare you to provide best practice supervision, create a safe and reflective space, and support the professional learning and growth of those you supervise.
This virtual workshop series will equip you with contemporary knowledge, tools and skills and set you on a clear path to building your confidence and competence as a supervisor.
Pre-work and self-reflection (0.5 hours)
Participants are required to complete readings and self-reflections in preparation for each workshop session.
Day 1 (3 hours) - 8 September 2023
10.00am-1.00pm AEST
The initial knowledge-based workshop presents evidence-based principles, models and tools that underpin safe and effective supervision practice. Participants will engage in a collaborative learning approach, via large and small group reflections and discussions. Various resources will be provided to participants including take-home tools and templates.
Day 2 (3 hours) - 15 September 2023
10.00am-1.00pm AEST
The follow up skills-based workshop builds on the first session through practical application and synthesis. Through an experiential learning approach, participants will delve into the supervisory role through case studies, live demonstration, observation, critical reflection and feedback.
Facilitated by a leader in social work practice and supervision, the course is designed to build foundational competence in social work supervision. It features a guest presentation by a well-known lived experience advocate who will promote and explain how ‘the personal is professional’.

A learning pack will be provided with the course materials including relevant literature, tools and templates.
Who should attend?
Recent or emerging social work supervisors or those seeking a pathway into a supervisory role. This course is also suitable for practitioners who have limited supervision experience and are looking to refresh their skillset and understanding of best practice. Allied health clinicians, nurses, case workers, counsellors and anyone seeking to build their supervisory knowledge and skills are also welcome.

Presenter details
Lead facilitator: Dr Anita Morris
Dr Anita Morris is highly experienced social worker and practice leader. She has worked over many years as a social worker in settings including government, community, health, education, disability, aged care and private practice. Her varied practice experience has been complemented by opportunities to train and supervise social workers and other allied health staff at all levels.
Dr Morris still cherishes the students who became her first supervisees, whom she learnt from and grew so much as a social worker. More recently, she has had the privilege of supervising very senior practitioners that share a wealth of practice experience and wisdom.
Through social work training, research, policy and practice Dr Morris strives to promote and further the social work profession and to role model practice leadership every day.
Co-facilitator: Lani Peach
Lani Peach has a Master of Arts degree in Human Services and over 25 years working in government, health and community services. Lani has knowledge and experience in aged, disability, carer and family services. Lani is trained in reflective practice supervision and Mental Health First Aid (MHFA™) facilitation.
Lani works in management, training, group facilitation, coaching and supervision, case management, and direct client services. She is at the forefront in addressing training needs for the disability and aged care sectors and sought after for her expertise.
Guest presenter: Geraldine Bilston
Lived experience advocate Geraldine Bilston is a professional consultant and victim-survivor of family violence. Geraldine has a Graduate Certificate in Family Violence and is currently undertaking a Master of Politics and Policy.
She was appointed as the Deputy Chair of the Victim Survivors’ Advisory Council in May 2020, and sits across a number of consulting and advisory boards. A familiar face to many after sharing her experience of family violence through a number of media outlets and she has also published her own writing.
Geraldine is an active advocate for the prevention of family violence, and the strengthening and support of lived experience in practice. She designed and developed Wisdom in Practice, a victim survivor-led reverse mentoring program designed for social work practitioners and their supervisors.
