Guest Speaker: Dr Peter Jones

Bio: Dr Peter Jones is a Senior Lecturer in Social Work & Human Services at James Cook University. He is a member of the Climate and Health Alliance (CAHA) and a core organiser for the ‘Our Climate - Our Health’ campaign. Peter has served several terms on the executive of the North Queensland Conservation Council and is the Secretary and past President of the Magnetic Island Nature Care Association. He has published a range of academic work in the area of social work and the environment, with a particular focus on eco-social curriculum development.

Topic: Social Work in the Climate Emergency

Description: As a profession, social work has been slow to engage with issues around the ecological crisis and climate change. However, this is changing as the human impacts of global heating become more apparent. This has led both the IFSW and the AASW to issue ‘climate emergency declarations’, putting this issue clearly on the agenda for the profession. This presentation will discuss the nature and impacts of the climate emergency, the challenges which this presents for the profession, and the role that social work can play in responding to this crisis. The emergence of the local group “Social Workers for Climate Action” will be discussed and opportunities for collaboration with other groups and organisations in our region explored.
