Mental Health Practice Group - Townsville

You are invited to join Helen Sheeran and Julie Prideaux, Convenors of the Mental Health Practice Group in Townsville.

Why participate?

Private practitioners often find themselves isolated from their peers especially when working as a sole practitioner. Mental Health Social Workers are expected to continue to enhance their knowledge and keep abreast of changes in the field in order to maintain accreditation status. These are some of the challenges that are unique to those working in the area of mental health whether in private practice, government or private agencies. In other areas across the country Mental Health Practice Groups have been set up to support MHSW in their work. Here are some of the benefits of joining the group:

  • Meeting other MHSW in the area
  • Information exchange on important issues impacting those in private practice
  • Discussion around state and national mental health initiatives that will have an impact on your work
  • Support through the accreditation process

Family Violence

Seminar Presented by Christine Craik, AASW National President

The North Queensland Branch is delighted to announce AASW National President, Christine Craik, Lecturer in Social Work at RMIT University presenting this valuable training opportunity for professional service providers in Cairns.

Christine will provide an initial introduction, updating participants on the work of the AASW in relation to family violence advocacy and reform.

In this training, Christine will share her expertise in successful, evidence-based models of practice in family violence.

Current research demonstrates that not only are workers often unable to identify the presence of family violence, they often misidentify the aggressor and in the process of this, are unintentionally colluding with the perpetrators. The misidentification leads to increased risk, silencing of victim/survivors and systems abuse in the ways in which we practice as social workers.

A working knowledge of attachment, like brain structure and function, is central to the understanding of Social Workers working with children, adolescents and adults. Its operation is not always obvious and prominent, but it gives us insights into personal functioning and relationships when we use it as a viewing prism, particularly when people are in trouble or stressed.
