This years Annual Social Work Dinner guest speaker will be Dr. Helen Watchirs
Dr Helen Watchirs OAM is the ACT President and Human Rights Commissioner. She was appointed as President in April 2016, and has been Commissioner for 13 years. Her work has focussed on Human Rights Audits of ACT detention facilities, as well as supervising the handling of discrimination, vilification and sexual harassment complaints during her 12 years as Discrimination Commissioner. She has 35 years experience as a human rights lawyer working for Federal Government agencies, and as an employee/expert to several United Nations agencies, including UNAIDS, WHO, ILO, UNDP & the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Dr Watchirs has a PhD in Human Rights Law & Masters in Public Law on HIV/AIDS issues from ANU. She was a member of the Australian Organ & Tissue Advisory Council, an NH&MRC Expert Ethical Advisory Group, the Ministerial Advisory Council on Blood Borne Viruses & STIs, the Social Security Appeals Tribunal, ANU Ethics Committee, and awarded the Telstra ACT Businesswoman of the Year in 2012.
The evening will include a 3 course meal, a presentation from Dr. Watchirs, entertainment and a raffle.
