Evidence-Informed Practice - What does this mean for Social Work?
A seminar presented by Debbie Plath
Evidence-Informed practice is a buzz word in health and human services, but how should we approach evidence-informed practice from a social work perspective? This presentation considers different ways in which evidence-informed practice can be conceptualised and approached. Organisational culture is identified as playing a key role in the implementation of evidence-informed practice. An organisational model for evidence-informed practice in human service settings is presented, with stakeholder engagement and critical reflection emphasised as key factors facilitating movement toward research-minded and evidence-informed practice.
Debbie Plath took up the position of Professor of Social Work and Discipline Lead at the Australian Catholic University in February 2018. She has a breadth of experience in social work practice, education and research and has published widely on approaches to evidence-informed practice in social work, most recently with the book Engaging Human Services with Evidence-Informed Practice (2017, NASW Press). Debbie previously held a senior social work academic position at the University of Newcastle. Before returning to academia this year, Debbie conducted a consulting business for several years in which she worked with human service organisations to strengthen evidence-informed approaches to practice through research, evaluation and organisational development projects.
