This workshop will explicate the Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) model and associated CBT therapeutic skills and their use in direct service delivery. Links will be made between the CBT model and Social Work knowledge and values. The presenter is an experienced trainer and past university lecturer in Mental Health in addition to being a private practitioner and Clinical Social Worker. Examples from the presenters own practice will be used to ground the CBT skills in social work practice. The political nature of CBT as an individualist-reformist intervention will be discussed and the presenter will argue that CBT can be used as an effective tool for empowering service users. Thus 'Empowerment CBT' will focus on using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy as a social worker in direct service social work practice.
To develop familiarity with and practice at using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy so that participants can use this modality in direct practice.
