This Graduate Certificate in Bereavement Counselling and Intervention (GC BCI) is highly sought after qualification that will give practitioners theoretical and clinical skill to support patients and clients with both normative and complicated grief reactions. The course is post graduate level and a nationally recognised VET qualification designed for counsellors, social workers, psychologists and other allied health professionals wanting to specialise in bereavement counselling and intervention. On completion of the Graduate Certificate in Bereavement Counselling and Intervention graduates will be able to practice effective bereavement counselling and intervention. The course equips students will applied competencies in:

  • effective bereavement counselling and intervention
  • theoretical frameworks associated with the field of loss, grief and bereavement
  • ethical supervised practice
  • workers self care

This course includes the following units:

  • COUCON001 Apply concepts of grief and bereavement
  • CHCFCS004 Provide grief and loss counselling
  • COUINV001 Provide appropriate interventions to support people experiencing complex bereavement
  • COUSER001 Access services to support clients experiencing bereavement
  • CHCPRP007 Work within a clinical supervision framework

Learning objectives

This course is intended to provide participants with the following agenda general education outcomes

  • Describe the theoretical frameworks that inform the field of loss grief and bereavement
  • Identify various types of losses that might be experienced by a client
  • Identify the age and developmental impacts upon grief and bereavement
  • Assess the impact of loss on the spiritual, physical, emotional, cognitive, behavioural and social aspects of grief upon a client
  • Recognise the impact of loss in the context of a client's experience
  • Demonstrate appropriate and sensitive counselling techniques
  • Evaluate their own experiences of loss and identify how this can impact upon their own counselling techniques

Learner prerequisites

Candidates may enter the qualification if they can demonstrate that they:

  • Have completed a Degree, Advanced Diploma or Diploma in a Counselling related field and have two years practical experience in counselling and have at least 2 years practical experience in counselling or
  • Have at least five years supervised general counselling practical experience
  • Further qualifications and experience: all qualifications and experience in human service related fields and loss will be considered. Experience can include working in any field with field and grief and loss issues such as mental health
