This online training is designed to help professionals work through challenging ethical dilemmas regarding squalor and hoarding. This area is still poorly understood within the Australian context, and can cause particularly troubling ethical dilemmas. This presentation is applicable to the practice knowledge of the full range of Social Work professionals who work in community, private practice and agency settings.

Presenter

Dr Shannon McDermott, has ten years of experience working on applied and theoretical research projects in the fields of ageing, mental health and homelessness. Her research aims to understand how policy and practice can be structured to deliver the best care for people in the community. Shannon began her career as a social worker working with homebound older people in San Francisco and went on to complete her PhD at the University of New South Wales in 2007. She worked as a Research Fellow at the UNSW Social Policy Research Centre and a Lecturer in the School of Social Sciences at UNSW before joining the Cognitive Decline Partnership Centre (CDPC).

Learning outcomes

By the end of the training, you will:

  • Have an understanding of the current research on squalor and hoarding
  • Be able to apply best practice ethical decision-making process
  • Be able to apply ethical principles to situations of hoarding and squalor
