Mindfulness is being integrated into a variety of medical, educational, and business settings. Evidence supports that MBSR offers many health and resilience based benefits for health care professionals, often reducing risk of burnout. Social workers often use clinical models that incorporate mindfulness practices and participating in an MBSR course will provide in-depth immersion in a range of mindfulness exercises. This can enhance self-care and provide an authentic experience which can be brought to your work practices. MBSR was developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn and has been at the core of much of the secular interest in mindfulness worldwide.

The program consists of eight 2 hour evening classes and one day-long silent class on a Sunday. The emphasis is on experiential learning - practicing becoming more mindful. Daily home practice is an integral part of the course and audio recordings and a course book are provided to guide this. Key topics such as: stress physiology, emotional regulation, cognitive behavioural strategies, interpersonal communication and implementing self-care are explored through group discussion and short exercises.

Extensive research has shown that most course participants report:

  • more energy and enthusiasm for life,
  • improved self-esteem and self-confidence,
  • improved concentration, memory and effective decision-making.
  • an increased ability to relax,

Participants have also reported:

  • a lasting decrease in psychological symptoms such as stress, anxiety, depression and irritability,
  • negative thinking patterns and physical symptoms including chronic health problems

Learning objectives

  • learn foundational mindfulness practices that are relevant to MBSR and other Mindfulness Based Interventions
  • directly experience the MBSR program including its format, content, themes and exercises, as well as the inquiry and discussion emerging from the program
  • develop a personal mindfulness practice, gaining the tools to integrate mindfulness into personal & professional life
  • complete an essential requirement for anyone considering doing further MBSR training or training in many other mindfulness techniques.
