The Program

We have an ageing population. Now more than ever Social Workers in a variety of contexts will be called upon to respond to seniors' distress. This course builds on existing Social Work knowledge about ageing contexts by adding a thorough psycho-social-emotional understanding of senior distress through a positive psychology lens. This course is particularly relevant for counsellors or those working in a para-therapeutic capacity who wish to direct their skill sets toward the growing number of older adults in our community.

Learning Outcomes

  • Learn about positive ageing principles and the five main types of senior distress
  • Learn how to assess using the ‘mental health and neurological spectrum’ and discern suitability for psychotherapy
  • Learn about the C.A.R.E. Plan and how it can empower family and facility staff to manage distress
  • Understand common barriers related to therapeutic engagement and how to overcome them
  • Learn how mainstream psychological practices can be adapted to suit an older adult clientele

The Presenter

Felicity Chapman works as a Mental Health Social Worker at Northern Health Network in Adelaide and in private practice. She has over 20 years experience in psychotherapy and began specializing in work with advanced seniors and their carers in 2009. In 2016 she was a nominee for the Hesta South Australian Social Work Practitioner of the Year Award. She is a member of the Psychology Ageing Interest Group and is a sessional lecturer and tutor for the University of Adelaide in the Graduate Program of Counselling and Psychotherapy.
