Annual Members Meeting Notice
The Queensland Branch Management Committee will hold a members' meeting on Tuesday 19 October 2021, from 6.00pm to 7.45pm via tele/videoconference. The decision to hold this meeting online is made in the interests of providing all members with equal access and opportunity to participate in the meeting.
Stay current, connected and engaged by joining your peers and the QLD Branch for their Annual Members Meeting.
Hear from the QLD Branch Management Committee who will reflect on their successes, opportunities and priorities. The meeting will include a presentation by our very special guest Sheila Sim who will talk about “Let me choose a good death”: the Queensland Voluntary Assisted Dying law.
The Branch encourages all members to register to attend the meeting to discuss the activities of the past year, the priorities of the forthcoming year and to vote to fill the vacant positions on the Branch Management Committee.
"Let me choose a good death": the Queensland Voluntary Assisted Dying Law
Sheila Sim began her career in Glasgow, Scotland, which was a great introduction to the challenges of social work. Migrating to Australia in 1978, (and joining the AASW), she worked in acute hospital settings, in NICU and women’s health. She was manager of the social work team at the Royal Hospital for Women for 25 years, until her retirement.
Illness, loss and death are familiar concerns for many social workers…. So in her work and in her personal life - as a patient, daughter, sister, friend - she has often helped to care for people who are dying, and pondered the question of what makes a good death, and how important it is to put the patient at the centre of the story. She has been involved in the campaign for a Voluntary Assisted Dying law in Queensland – a law which was passed on 16 September 2021.
Branch Management Committee vacancies
The Queensland Branch has 2 vacant positions for General Committee Members on our Branch Management Committee.
We are now seeking nominations for these vacant positions. We are seeking reliable, committed and enthusiastic Queensland AASW members who have an interest in contributing to the work of the Queensland Branch to join our active and vibrant Committee. These documents provide more information on the roles and responsibilities of the National Board, National Office and Branches, along with the general BMC role statement:
We strongly encourage those considering nominating to be available, if elected, for the final tele/videoconference meeting of the Committee in 2021 (Monday 15 November, 6.00 - 7.00pm).
In the event that the number of nominations exceeds the number of the positions available, an election will be held during the Members Meeting. During this process, the nominees will be provided with up to two minutes to deliver a candidate statement. We ask all candidates to submit a candidate statement of no more than 500 words that may be read out by the Returning Officer or delegate acting on behalf of the AASW should you be unable to join the meeting. All financial members will be provided with the opportunity to vote for their preferred candidates, through a proxy vote if they are unable to attend the meeting in person. Details regarding proxy voting will be provided closer to the Branch Annual Members Meeting once we know the number of nominations received.
Once again, we encourage you to consider becoming part of our Branch Management Committee and we look forward to receiving your nomination form. Should you have any questions or concerns, please send an email to the Queensland Branch on 07 2101 4629 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Via ZOOM Meetings - a link will be sent to registrants on the day of the meeting.
