Human Rights and social work Kerry Maxfield
Live webinar - This presentation will focus on the discussion on what are human rights and where do they come from, how do they operate and how they become embedded and applicable in Australian law? Can we rely on them when challenging the injustices we see in our communities and how do we empower clients in accessing them. The standard you walk past is the standard you accept – will be discussed in terms of human rights. The presentation will cover:
- The Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948 UN General Assembly – the journey towards a just society which adheres and upholds human rights
- The 4 basic freedoms: freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom from fear and freedom from want
- The understanding of International law and high court decisions which bring focus on human rights which relate to social justice issues
About the presenters
Patricia Muncey is a Field Educator at the University of South Australia and Branch President of the AASW
Kerry Maxfield is a lecturer in the School of Psychology, Social Work and Social Policy at the University of South Australia an experienced Social Worker. She holds a Master of Social Work, Bachelor of Law and a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice.
