Program structure:

  1. LivingWorks Start - 90 minute self-paced, online simulated training completed prior to the live webinar.
  2. 90 minute Live Interactive webinar, debrief and workshop activity led by 3 expert trainers in Suicide First Aid - held August 3, 2021.

LivingWorks Start is a 90 minute online foundational skills training program that prepares participants to recognise when someone is having thoughts of suicide and take action to keep them safe. The program features built-in resource for help and safety and uses leading-edge online learning tools including interactive simulations.

The 90 minute interactive webinar will provide an overview of LivingWorks programs and a presentation on the evidence behind the shift from risk assessment to a focus on safety. This is an interactive session with a presentation format, followed by a debrief and workshop activities led by 3 expert trainers in Suicide Intervention.

The registration fee for this live, interactive webinar includes 60 day access to the LivingWorks Start program, available online and accessible at a time that is convenient to you before the Live Interactive webinar.

Who should attend? Emerging, Evolving and Established allied health professionals who wish to equip themselves with foundational skills in suicide first aid.

Important note: The LivingWorks Start program is strongly recommended as pre-learning for Emerging and Evolving social workers prior to the August 3 webinar as it will provide you with the foundation knowledge required to participate in this live Interactive webinar.

The LivingWorks Start program is recommended as pre-learning for Established social workers prior to the August 3 webinar as it will provide you with the opportunity to practice and polish your foundational skills and response to client disclosure of suicidal thoughts.

LivingWorks Start provides the opportunity to practice your foundational skills in a safe, simulated environment with multiple different case studies through a variety of mediums.

This learning program provides 3 hours of CPD, attributable to AASW Mental Health and Clinical Credentials.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will:

  • Recognise people who have thoughts of suicide.
  • Understand and practice how to ask clients directly about suicide.
  • Be introduced to the concept of safety planning with clients at risk of suicide.
  • Learn about the application of suicide intervention skills within the context of Social Work practice.
  • Be provided access to a variety of local resources and learn how to connect clients to those that can provide further support.


Belinda Connell

Belinda has been a registered Social Worker for 25 years and is currently the Training Manager for LivingWorks Australia in NSW and ACT. Belinda has experience in the Government and Non-Government sector in a range of roles, and has also served as a sworn Police Officer with the NSW Police Service. Belinda has been involved in suicide prevention for the past 10 years and has delivered LivingWorks suicide intervention training in Australia and overseas. As Training Manager, Belinda oversees a network of more than 190 LivingWorks ASIST and safeTALK trainers. 

Renee Tsatsis

Renee is the Training Manager for LivingWorks Australia -Victoria and Tasmania. She has extensive suicide prevention and training experience, having worked for over 15 years in the community and mental health sectors - most recently managing a statewide mental health helpline.

As Training Manager, Renee manages and oversees the rollout of suicide prevention activities and projects with key stakeholders across the region, along with supporting local trainers in their development as safeTALK and ASIST trainers.

Renee holds a Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) and a Master of Social Work, and is an accredited social worker registered with the Australian Association of Social Workers. Renee is an ASIST and safeTALK trainer and has delivered over 150 workshops. She is also an ASIST Coach and safeTALK Instructor, and has a passion and commitment to delivering and supporting others to deliver high quality skills based training in order to create a suicide safer community.

Shayne Connell

Shayne Connell, MBA, has extensive leadership experience in social cause organizations and as an elected official. He previously served as a manager and coordinator in the cancer research fundraising field and represented the people of Newcastle, Australia, as a city councillor.

Shayne holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and an MBA from the University of Newcastle, Australia, and has been extensively involved in suicide prevention as both a LivingWorks trainer and coach—where he has delivered over 100 workshops—and as a coordinator and crisis counselling volunteer with Lifeline Australia.
