This unique, online course provides meaningful, experiential learning that has been contextualized using film and interactive narratives, which focus on essential knowledge and skills required for new or inexperienced supervisors working in the human services profession. It provides maximum opportunity for participants to engage and learn, using multiple methods including realistic video and audio scenarios, reflective exercises, interactive inventories and quizzes, emails, chats and group discussions, content rich downloads and readings, worksheets and internet links. The course offers a high level of content integrity and a safe, supportive learning environment. Material is designed for participants to use immediately with supervisees in the workplace.

Learning objectives

At the end of the course, participants will have:

  • Understood what constitutes effective supervision in a range of contexts
  • Learnt how to use supervision techniques and strategies to improve their supervisee’s skills
  • Applied models for supervision, including functional, reflective learning and solution focused frameworks
  • Increased their knowledge of adult learning and how to integrate a strengths based approaches into supervision relationships
  • Developed their capacity to hold purposeful, structured supervision sessions
  • Observed supervision conversations and challenges
  • Developed skills for managing difficult supervision conversations
  • Gained confidence in establishing their authority as a trusted and competent supervisor

​Learner prerequisites

Prior supervision experience is not essential. However, participants need a minimum of 3 years professional experience and be intending to supervise staff or be supervising staff.
