This workshop is designed to provide information and understanding of grief and loss association with the impact of illness and death. It explores a range of grief theories and common responses to loss within a social and cultural context. It provides information on resilience and protective factors, as well as potential risk factors for complications in grief. Strategies for supporting grieving people will include the process of psycho-education. The lived experience of individuals and families will be incorporated throughout the workshop and participants will have an opportunity to hear directly from a bereaved carer. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on and discuss self care when working with grieving people.

Learning objectives

Participants will learn about:

  • grief and loss theory including models of bereavement care
  • common grief responses
  • risk, resilience and protective factors
  • strategies for supporting people who are grieving, including psycho-education
  • grief and bereavement services
  • self care strategies for practitioners

Presenter details

Claudia is a specialist grief and loss counsellor and social worker currently employed in the community palliative care sector. She has worked in primary health care for 20 years, in various service delivery and leadership capacities. She has specific interest and expertise in working with individuals and families living with a chronic and terminal illness. Claudia holds a Bachelor of Social Work and Bachelor of Arts (major in Psychology) from the University of Melbourne and is a current member of the AASW. She has completed a Graduate Certificate in Bereavement Counselling and Intervention with the Australian Centre for Grief and Bereavement. She is a certified Workforce Trainer and Assessor and enjoys sharing her expertise and knowledge in supporting individuals and families during critical times of transition and change.
