|CPD hrs:||0.5 hrs|
Karen Martin and Leeanne Rule, Victims Assistance and Counselling Program, Sunraysia Community Health Services
In the Northern Loddon Mallee Region, despite victims of crime presenting with symptoms of PTSD and having an opportunity to access private providers for counselling, the following was identified by the local the local Victims Assistance and Counselling Program:
- Victims were overwhelmed by the process of engaging with several service providers, due to the retelling of the crime.
- Victims' engagement with private providers was not consistent and disconnected.
- Limited trauma specialised local service providers.
- Long waiting lists at local private providers.
Best practice of Trauma intervention identifies that early access to supportive services and seamless service delivery enhances the victims' recovery.
The Victims Assistance and Counselling Program at Sunraysia Community Health Services has been proactive in developing a Case Management and Therapeutic Trauma Model, which has aimed to enhance service provision and recovery for clients traumatised by their experience. the models development began in 2010 and throughout 2012 has been practiced extensively.
The Therapeutic Model used in the Victims Assistance and Counselling Program has been evaluated and reflects the outcomes for victims and whether it has been effective in promoting their recovery.
