As social workers we may learn the basics about trauma, development, attachment and the effects of neglect in these experiences during our degrees. However, the practical application of this knowledge and the subsequent skills are difficult to maintain or obtain if workers are not adequately supported through supervision, ongoing training or experience and an unsupportive or risk averse team and organisational culture.

Trauma informed practice requires a high level understanding of your own practice framework, values and reactions to what can be difficult and stressful scenarios for clients. It requires ongoing training, supervision, support and a positive and trauma informed work environment/organisational framework.

This 3 hour interactive virtual workshop gives an opportunity for social workers to refresh and learn through experiential activities, case study reflections and delivery of knowledge.

It explores the essentials of trauma informed practice including an awareness of trauma followed by putting this into direct practice experience and examples, encouraging social workers to work through case scenarios in a step by step reflection using what they have learnt from the earlier parts of the session.

The workshop will cover:

  • The importance of language
  • A brief visit to development
  • What is trauma?
  • Effects of trauma on children and young people
  • Brief Introduction to Trauma and the brain
  • Responses by children and young people who have experienced trauma
  • Exploring the workers own context
  • What is trauma informed practice?
  • Elements of trauma informed practice
  • Reframing to strengths
  • Barriers to implementing trauma informed practice

The session also includes 4 opportunities for experiential learning including activities and reflection time working through case studies.

  1. Increased confidence and knowledge around understanding the basics of trauma
  2. Enriched skills in applying impacts of trauma knowledge to practice (practical skills development)

  4. Development of framework suitable to share with young people/clients for psycho education purposes.
  5. Understanding of own self-care in relation to working with people who have experienced trauma.

Facilitators

Renee Mills, Team Leader, ARROS (Community Living Association)

Renee’s passion for working with young people at risk has seen her work in numerous youth focused services across the community sector, including homelessness, mental health, disability, and early intervention for young people at risk of early home or school leaving. Renee’s practice at CLA, since 2005, has included community development project roles, school based social work, Student Unit management, and working with young people with intellectual disability at risk of homelessness, where they have an out of home care experience. Renee’s passion for this work includes a focus on continual development of best practice and working collegially to ensure the best possible outcomes for young people. Renee holds both a Masters Social Work Studies (UQ) and a Grad Dip in Community and International Development (Deakin) and is currently the Acting Team Leader of ARROS.

Audrey Fernandez graduated from Griffith University in 2012 with a Bachelor in Psychological Science and from University of Queensland in 2019 with a Masters in Social work. Audrey had been working casually with BEROS and Community Living Association from 2018 before getting a position as a case manager with BEROS in 2019. Audrey has a lot of knowledge working with people with intellectual disabilities and young people in the Child Safety system. From the roles Audrey has worked in she has developed knowledge on how to practice with a trauma informed lens, how to work at the pace of the client and how to sit with escalations and support people through them.

BEROS & ARROS

...

BEROS (formerly known as Brisbane Emergency Response Outreach Service) is funded by Moreton Region Child Safety (in QLD) to provide support to young people 12-18 years old who are self-placing and under child protection orders.

The young people supported by BEROS have often experienced complex and ongoing trauma, are very distrusting of services and child safety and are disengaged from most support services.
BEROS provides 3 core services across 24/7:

  • Case management
  • Overnight support (emergency accommodation)
  • Street to home (after hours outreach)

ARROS is funded through the Department of Children, Youth Justice and Multicultural Affairs, ILC (Information, Linkages and Capacity Building NDIA) and individuals NDIS plans. ARROS works alongside young people with suspected or diagnosed intellectual and/or cognitive disabilities transitioning from care who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

The young people we support at ARROS have often experienced multiple complex circumstances, they often have a history of trauma and social disadvantage which can result in complex behaviours that further marginalise them from mainstream society.

ARROS provide three programs;

  • Transitions from care outreach support
  • NDIS outreach support
  • ARROS Place (group work)
