Training Module 3 - Supporting Recovery from Trauma

  • The experience of trauma by people with intellectual disability;
  • General principles for supporting people with intellectual disability to recover from trauma;
  • Specialist skills and useful approaches for counselling people with intellectual disability who have experienced trauma

Please note - The information presented in Topics 3, 4, & 5 of this module is designed to assist qualified counselling practitioners to develop their knowledge and skills for working with clients with intellectual disability. This information may also assist non-counselling service providers and support people to identify appropriate counselling opportunities for people with intellectual disability, but does not provide foundational counselling training.

General Information

This training is based on feminist practice, trauma informed theory/practice, narrative theory/practice, art therapy, and cognitive behavioural theory.

Who should attend?

All levels of the social work profession.

Learning Outcomes of Module 3

Improved knowledge and practice in:

  • The experience of trauma by people with intellectual disability;
  • General principles for supporting people with intellectual disability to recover from trauma; and
  • Specialist skills and useful approaches for counselling people with intellectual disability who have experienced trauma.

Meet the Presenter

Jill Oliver

Jill is a psychologist and counsellor and has worked at WWILD for over 10 years in which she has developed a depth of knowledge and flexibility of practice to meet the needs of people with intellectual disability recovering from trauma through a range of creative, visual and narrative practices.
