Dr Kerry Summerscales - CSM (Major Retired), Qualifications: BMBS, FRACGP, BSci-Path, DAME, Cert Occ Med
Dr Kerry Summerscales joined the Australian Regular Army in May of 1990 at the ripe old age of 18 and after her basic training at Kapooka, she was assigned to Royal Australian Army Medical Corps as a Medic. She had a few postings as a Medic before retraining as a Pathology Technician. She reached the rank of Sergeant, however had achieved her BSci-Path part time via correspondence and was able to take a Commission as a Lieutenant Scientific Officer. It was after this, that she was accepted into Graduate Medicine program at Flinders University. After graduating and completing her internship and residency, she returned to full time Army and was posted to Adelaide and Townsville as an Army Medical Officer. In 2017, she was awarded her Fellowship for the RACGP, and at the same time was promoted to Major. She moved to Mackay when she was posted to Townsville in Aug 2018 and fully transitioned out of the Army in Aug 2020.
Her deployments have included Bougainville, East Timor, Solomon Islands and Maritime Operations.
Her career highlights include being awarded a Conspicuous Service Medal as a Corporal and the RACGP Future Leaders Presidents Medal for her work in educating GPs and other clinicians on Veterans Culture, Veterans Health and DVA literacy.
She is now a GP specialising in Veterans Health, and skin and lives here in Mackay with her husband Kev and their two Burmese Cats - Cleo and Count Chocula.
