My name is Deisy Amorin-Woods, Director and principal practitioner at both Insight Counselling & Relationship Centre and The Heights Counselling Services. I am a highly qualified, experienced, and accredited mental health practitioner and individual, couple and family therapist. At the undergraduate level, I have trained in the fields of social work, psychology and teaching. I have acquired postgraduate training (nationally and internationally) in counselling, family therapy and couple therapy and also hold a Masters in mental health and family therapy from the faculty of Psychiatry, University of Queensland. I am currently undertaking my PhD in the field of counselling exploring systemic work with diverse cultures. I have extensive and broad experience in the therapeutic field having worked across the government, non-government and private sectors. I have provided direct clinical services to clients (from diverse cultural backgrounds) in a diversity of areas including mental health, drug and alcohol, justice system, bereavement, women’s health, immigration (with migrants and refugees) as well as sexual and reproductive health. I have also held senior clinical positions having managed services and provided supervision to allied health teams in the mental health, sexual and reproductive health and drug and alcohol fields. Exclusive to the mental health sector, I have worked in public mental health services, Medicare Locals, and in suicide intervention teams providing services to young people and adults, from a broad range of backgrounds, presenting with mild to medium, to severe &complex set of needs. I have also worked at adult Day Therapy services providing psycho-educational and therapeutic groups. My most recent position held was as Manager of the Counselling Unit at Family Planning, WA. I have also worked as a seasonal academic at Perth Universities, in the Masters of Counselling program and the undergraduate Social Work programs. While working in these settings, I have simultaneously worked in private practice for the past 10 years where I have continued to provide counselling and psychological services for a variety of presenting issues to a broad range of groups including adolescents, adults, couples and families. I also run a variety of therapeutic and psycho-educational groups and workshops for individuals, couples and families. I am an approved ATAPS and Medicare Better Access mental health provider of focused psychological services. I have trained in a number of therapeutic interventions including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, Mindfulness Base Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Interpersonal Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Narrative Therapy and Motivational Interviewing. I am also trained in family therapy models and interventions. I provide short and long-term therapy and I am able to combine the above interventions with psycho-education and skills training in addressing and managing a wide range of presenting issues and mental disorders. Further to this, as a qualified and experienced family therapist, I have a keen interest in addressing individual presenting issues at the systemic level.
