How do I apply for membership?

Online at aasw.asn.au or by downloading the application from the website and sending it to the Membership team by email, post or fax.

When does membership start and finish?

1 July (or from the day of application) - 30 June

What happens if I don't renew my membership before 30 June?

Membership expires on the 30 June, after this time, you can reinstate membership by calling the Membership team on 1800 630 124.

What methods of payment are there?

You may pay by cheque/money order, credit card, bpay or monthly direct debit deductions.

What supporting documentation is required?

1. Students
When applying for student membership please provide either a certified copy of your student card, which demonstrates your current enrolment in an accredited social work program. If your student card DOES NOT demonstrate your enrolment in an accredited social work program (i.e. it does not include the name of your program-e.g. Bachelor of Social Work-and a current date) ask an AASW member (e.g. one of your lecturers) to write a declaration verifying your enrolment, using this template:

You may also provide a copy of your transcript or enrolment notice as evidence of your eligibility.

2. Australian Qualified Social Workers
When applying for membership please provide either a certified copy of your degree OR academic transcript OR letter of completion from your university.


3. Overseas Qualified Social Workers
When applying for membership please provide a certified copy of your AASW assessment. You will also need to provide your AASW reference number during the online application process.

4. Reduced Fee
If your gross personal income is less than $49,036.00 you may apply for, or renew at a reduced membership fee.

What are the differences in benefits between the different types of membership?

Full Fee
For: Applicants holding either an AASW approved social work qualification from an Australian tertiary institution, or qualification from overseas that has been recognised by AASW as comparable to an AASW approved social work qualification.

Reduced Fee
For: The AASW provides for a reduced fee to members with a combined taxable income below a low income threshold ($49,036) to enable them to remain a member and ensure their full participation in professional social work as a member of the AASW. Reduced fee members are entitled to access all of the services and benefits of a full member of AASW.

New Graduate
For: Members renewing or joining within 2 years of completion of their first qualifying Social Work degree.

Fully Retired
For: Applicants holding either an AASW approved social work qualification from an Australian tertiary institution, or qualification from overseas that has been recognised by AASW comparable to an AASW approved social work qualification, and are fully retired from paid employment and eligible for a full pension.

Student Fee
For: Students enrolled in an AASW accredited BSW or MSW (qualifying) and those already eligible for AASW membership and undertaking full time Masters or Doctoral social work studies.

How do I change my membership type and branch?

You can do this at renewal time by selecting the appropriate options prior to renewing, or you can call 1800 630 124.

How do I have my name changed on the database?

If you provide a certified copy of your marriage/change of name certificate to the membership team, your membership name can be updated.
