Changes that have come into effect on 1 July 2022 see the distinct recognition of social work in the NDIS scheme and two new item numbers related specifically to social work practice undertaken by AASW members.
The removal of social work from the ‘other therapies’ category under capacity building – Assessment Recommendation Therapy or Training is something the AASW has long advocated for to demonstrate and quantify social work user access in distinct terms.
AASW CEO Cindy Smith said, “To have AASW social workers provided with their own item numbers and distinction outside of ‘other therapies’ clearly shows the value that AASW social workers provide to the users of NDIS services. This is the recognition, demonstration of value and professionalism that our members have long sought and deserve.”
In addition, the Community Engagement Assistance item under the Therapy Supports (over seven years of age) section is the same as last year, but it has been separated out into its own section in this updated version, but it is the same item number.
“Importantly, and validating the value of AASW membership, only AASW members and those that meet the NDIS requirements can claim these item numbers. This clearly demonstrates that NDIS views AASW members at the pinnacle of professional practice, ethical conduct and advanced learning,” said Ms Smith.
The changes to the NDIS schedule can be found on the NDIS website.
