Eurydice Dixon: Ridi, truly her 'own unique and promising person'

We need a cultural shift

Again we are "shocked" at a horrific attack on a woman and again we are looking for answers. Without commenting specifically on the current case, the fault lies in our sanctioning of the cultural expectations and attitudes towards girls and women by men.

Boys are bombarded with messages that girls are not their equal, exist for them, and can be degraded, humiliated and abused. It happens when women and girls walk past building sites, go to school, play sport, attend concerts, ride public transport, go on dates, stay at home and get pulled over for traffic infringements.

From young women playing footy who are not paid at the same rates as young men, through to porn that degrades and abuses women (about 94per cent of all porn and how young men and women learn about sex) – it is all connected. We need a massive cultural shift. We are all responsible for this.
