AASW welcomes Women's Safety Package

The allocation of $15 million in the Women’s Safety package announced by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull acknowledges the place of social workers in a properly coordinated response to family violence, said the President of the Australian Association of Social Workers’ President, Professor Karen Healy today.
“The AASW welcomes Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s announcement of a $100 million Women’s Safety Package, in particular the $15 million that will be used to establish specialised domestic violence units to provide access to coordinated legal, social work and cultural liaison services for women in a single location,” said Professor Healy.
“It will allow legal services to work with local hospitals, including those used by women living in culturally and linguistically diverse communities and in regional/remote areas.”
Professor Healy said the Women’s Safety Package shows leadership from the top and is an increase in funding in real terms for frontline family violence services, and in line with the AASW’s submission to the Royal Commission into Family Violence in Victoria.
“The package has many of the features that the AASW has been advocating for over some time to assist victims of family violence, including helping women to stay safely in their own homes rather than becoming homeless and emphasising a media campaign to change attitudes towards violence against women,” Professor Healy said.
She said the AASW supports the Prime Minister’s call for respect for women and urges him to also address the underlying social and economic factors that contribute to gender based inequalities.
“Action in this area will ensure equal pay and conditions for women that will embed genuine equality and respect for women in our economic structures,” Professor Healy said.
The AASW represents over 8,000 professional social workers from around Australia many of whom work on the front line of responding to and preventing violence against women.
