It's time to legislate for marriage equality in Australia

Published: 30 June 2015

The Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) welcomes the US Supreme Court ruling regarding marriage equality and calls for the Australian Government to act accordingly.

National President of the AASW, Professor Karen Healy AM said, ‘It is intensely disappointing that Australia, the country that has historically led the world in workers’ and women’s rights, is now the only developed English speaking country that does not allow same-sex couples to marry.’

‘Legislation should reflect the values of the community but we currently have laws that exclude and oppress individuals on the basis of who they are and who they love.

‘We urge the federal government to allow a free vote and to accept that the time has come to make marriage equality a reality,’ said Professor Healy.

The AASW represents over 8700 professional social workers who are committed to working with communities and individuals to promote wellbeing, human rights and social justice.
