Mental health report needs to be released
Published: 16 April 2015
The Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) is calling on the Federal Government to release the full Report of the National Review of Mental Health Programmes and Services so its recommendations can be considered by the entire mental health sector and the community.
Chief Executive Officer Glenys Wilkinson says the AASW is encouraged by the apparent thoroughness and breadth of the recommendations in the leaked report but they indicate wide ranging directions that need further consideration.
‘Re-distributing resources within the sector is key to the National Mental Health Commission’s findings and the AASW particularly applauds the outspoken approach to the redistribution of resources that are currently directed at acute hospital funding,’ Ms Wilkinson said.
‘It is crucial that beds are available when they are needed but people live their lives in the community, so it is vital that targeted community resources are directed to good preventive and rehabilitation services.’
The report recommends a “person centered mental health system” so Ms Wilkinson says everyone affected by it needs to have an opportunity to review it.
‘We would like the community and sector to see the full report because it will inform the discussion and the planning for reform in the mental health sector. The Government should release it immediately.’
The AASW represents over 8,000 social workers in Australia, many of whom work in mental health.
