The Four Corners documentary into Don Dale juvenile detention centre showed traumatised children kept in unsanitary conditions and being subject to shocking abuses by those charged with their care and supervision. Solitary confinement, tear gassing and mechanical confinement of children is unacceptable yet this is what is happening. A key aim of youth justice is to divert children from the criminal justice system. We have little chance of achieving this goal when children are subject to inhumane and degrading treatment in detention. For the sake of the children and for the families and communities to which they will return, we need to do better.
