SA Child Protection chief to talk at AASW World Social Work Day breakfast
Published: 17 March 2017
Child Protection Department Chief Executive, Cathy Taylor, will outline her vision for connecting all SA services for at-risk families and children, and the role social workers can play in community and government services, at an AASW World Social Work Day (WSWD) breakfast in Adelaide next Tuesday, 21 March.
More than 100 professional social workers will be present at the event which is being hosted by the Australian Association of Social Workers’ SA Branch.
Ms Taylor will speak about this year’s WSWD theme – building inclusive and sustainable communities – and how it reflects the SA government’s commitment to implementing the recommendations of the Nyland Royal Commission which focus on supporting communities to care for children.
Implementing change will be challenging and social workers and effective interagency cooperation will play a key role in delivering new modes of consumer directed care to the state’s vulnerable children and families.
AASW SA President, Dr Mary Hood, says the Branch has been actively advocating for change in the child protection sector in South Australia since 2014 and it is looking forward to working with government to implement the Nyland recommendations that will empower communities and through them, children and their families.
“Professional social workers know that the wellbeing of vulnerable children and families in South Australia requires the employment of professionals in child protection roles, effective supervision and ongoing training, as well as a model of care that reflects the needs of children and families and interagency cooperation,” said Dr Hood.
“Every day social workers provide key supports to improve the lives of individuals, families and communities across Australia and around the world. They are passionate advocates for more inclusive communities and key partners in creating policy change and implementing service delivery.”
