The Australian Association of Social Workers is the delegated assessing authority, on behalf of the Federal Government, for social workers interested in providing services through Medicare Australia. This assessment process is entitled Accreditation as a Mental Health Social Worker (AMHSW).

To be eligible to apply for a Allied Health professional Medicare Provider Number and access referrals under the below listed Government funded programs, the social worker must be assessed as meeting the requirements for Accreditation as a Mental Health Social Worker.

There are a few Medicare programs and several Federal Government Department initiatives which recognise Accredited Mental Health Social Workers as being eligible to provide a particular service. Depending on the program/initiative, there may be other requirements in which the individual social worker may be required to undertake, please refer to the links below for further specific detail.

Accredited Mental Health Social Workers utilising the Medicare Provider Number and providing services through: Better Access to Mental Health Care, Chronic Disease Management and or Access to Allied Psychological Services programs, may only provide services that utilise Focussed Psychological Strategies (FPS) as outlined by Medicare Australia.
