The AASW 2021 Mentoring Program has seen incredible demand just days after launching the program on February 15. We are delighted to have received so many applications from members looking to enrich their career or professional journey by engaging in this program.

However, to enable the AASW to manage the quality of the program, including assessing applications, matching and pairing and to optimise the participant experience, we are temporarily suspending applications from Mentees due to overwhelming demand.

Applications for Mentors can still be made via the process below.

About the Mentoring Program

A significant commitment to members by the AASW is to continually strive to provide meaningful support and structure to assist both new and existing members on their social work journey by providing opportunities that seek to enhance their skill development and create career pathways and learnings. Mentoring plays an important part in the social work career journey. Past membership surveys have identified the desire of members to participate in a formally structured program.

NOTE: The AASW Mentoring Program is not designed to replace existing supervision arrangements or contracts between members as stipulated by the AASW Supervision Standards 2014. Find out more about how mentoring differs from supervision here.

What is Mentoring?

Mentoring is defined as “a mutually beneficial relationship which involves a more experienced person helping a less experienced person to identify and achieve their goals” (https://chf.org.au/).

While mentoring can often develop through the mutual understanding and evolution of a relationship between two or more people, a structured approach to any mentoring relationship can significantly enhance the benefits to both parties.

Career mentoring can develop some of the most sought-after attributes that employers look for; industry awareness and first-hand knowledge of life challenges faced in the workplace.

What is the purpose of the Mentoring Program?

The program will provide a forum for social workers at all stages of their careers or professional journey to develop an on-going mentee / mentor relationship with another social worker facilitated by regular meetings and discussion of matters relating to professional challenges, in a supportive framework.

The program’s purpose is not to facilitate a participant to find work through their partnership but instead foster knowledge sharing, insights and learnings which can co-facilitate each other’s objectives for joining the program.

Vision: To create a formalised structure that enables member social workers to participate in a program that seeks to resolve, develop, or advance a members’ interests

Mission: To strengthen and advance the well-being, capabilities, and skills of all AASW members by contributing to the social work profession and the Association in general

Benefits for Mentors

Mentoring goes beyond simply sharing knowledge and experiences. The mentor/mentee relationship provides for mutually beneficial rewards to both parties. Mentors can learn significantly from their mentees through listening, reflecting and being actively involved in the development of their mentee. Being involved in mentoring also provides some tangible benefits that can reward mentors professionally.
