I've submitted an application, now what?
1. If unsuccessful, your Branch Services Co-ordinator (BSC) will communicate this to you and discuss the reasons your application was not successful
2. If successful, your application will be assessed and your BSC will begin the process of matching you to a suitable mentor
3. Your BSC will communicate to you once a successful pairing has been made
4. Read through all the available resources provided that your BSC will send you
5. You will be invited to (and expected to attend) a “welcome and orientation event” on May 13 (online and evening)
6. You will be asked to sign a mentor / mentee agreement form
7. Complete the mentee self-assessment review and send to your mentor ahead of session 1
8. You will then formally commence the program and the mentee will initiate first session contact

If your application is successful, your application will be assessed and your BSC will begin the process of matching you to a suitable mentor. From here you will then be invited to a 'Welcome and Orientation Event' which you are expected to attend. You will be asked to sign a mentor / mentee agreement form. You will then formally commence the program and the mentee will initiate contact regarding the first session.
For mentees: Ensure that you complete the self-assessment review and send it to your mentor ahead of your first session.
You will be notified by your Branch Service Co-ordinator. Your application may be unsuccessful if you have not met the eligibility criteria for participating in the program for example. Your branch Service Co-ordinator will communicate to you the reasons should your application be unsuccessful.
Your Branch Service Co-ordinator will determine your eligibility for participation. There is no appeals process once a determination has been made by your Branch Service Co-ordinator. You may wish to re-evaluate your application, ensuring you meet eligibility, and apply again for a future intake.
It is expected that the mentee will make first contact with the mentor to arrange the first meeting. Both the mentor and mentee will be provided with each others’ name, contact mobile phone number and e-mail address for this purpose.
To maximise the benefit of joining the program, you should try and ensure you are available to commit to every session as arranged between the mentee and mentor. You do not necessarily have to meet physically for every session, as long as both the mentor and mentee are following the structure of the program.
In the application form, you will be asked what style of meeting format you would prefer with your mentee / mentor. If you prefer face to face meetings, then your Branch Service Co-ordinator will seek to pair you with a mentor / mentee where this can occur. However this might now always be possible due to availability.
The AASW Mentoring Program is not designed to replace existing supervision arrangements or contracts between members as stipulated by the AASW Supervision Standards 2014.
The AASW Mentoring Program should be considered and viewed as an independent program that has different program and participant objectives and serves to further member engagement and professional progression through a different structure. Mentorship provides guidance and support in a less formalised format than supervision and often includes the setting of career goals and pathways.
Mentoring is generally regarded as being temporary (although some mentoring relationships may continue in an informal capacity) and serves to fill the immediate needs of a participant by addressing existing professional challenges and allows participants to largely set the terms of their own relationship.
Supervision on the other hand, is a professional activity in which practitioners are engaged throughout the duration of their careers regardless of experience or qualification. The participants are accountable to professional standards and defined competencies and to organisational policy and procedures (Davys & Beddoe, 2010: 21).
Supervision programs are often more skills- based than Mentorship.
Supervision should be formalised in an agreement and follow the requirements outlined in the AASW Supervision Standards 2014

For Mentors: Category 3 – Professional Identity
Providing support or mentoring to social workers
Contributing to the learning of other social workers
For Mentees: Category 1 – Supervision
