Volunteer with the AASW
The Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) engages with 300 – 400 AASW member volunteers across Australia, who all contribute to the Association’s operations in a variety of ways. Our members who volunteer time to support AASW are instrumental in the delivery of services to our members and in being a voice for the social work profession.
There are currently six different AASW volunteering bodies for members to be involved in:
Branch Level
The Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) has nine branches throughout Australia. Each AASW Branch enables members to participate in and benefit from the professional communities in their region.
Practice Groups are a forum for social workers operating in different areas of practice or in specific regions to share common practice issues, provide expertise and develop workshops and other events.
Networking Groups are a less formal forum for social workers operating in different areas of practice or in specific regions to meet and share common practice issues.
National Level
Members of the Editorial Board are responsible for ensuring that the Australian Social Work Journal is a high quality and internationally recognised social work publication that is produced in accordance with the strategic directions of the AASW Board of Directors.
The National Research Committee (NRC) provides leadership, coordination and strategic focus to research that promotes the mission of the AASW. The NRC assists in the development, maintenance and review of policies and procedures.
The Ethics Office is responsible for the receipt and review of allegations of misconduct pursuant to the AASW By-Laws on Ethics – Ethics Complaint Management Process and, for the review of criminal and fitness to practice declarations pursuant to the AASW By-Laws on Ethics – Declaration Assessment Process.
When a complaint or declaration is referred to Hearing or Appeal Panel by the Ethics Council, the Ethics Office is responsible for arranging a panel of social work peers from the Hearing/Appeal Panel member pool to preside on the complaint or declaration matter.
The role of Hearing/Appeal Panel member is integral to ensuing that provisions within the AASW Code of Ethics and Practice Standards and the AASW By-Laws on Ethics are adhered to by AASW members and AASW membership applicants.
If would like further information about the Hearing/Appeal Panel role or you are a social worker who believes they have the relevant experience and can contribute effectively to the Hearing or Appeal Panel role, please send an email with your CV and cover letter to [email protected].
