Lyra Taylor Social Work Impact Summit 2025 – proactive social work in family violence

Lyra Taylor Social Work Impact Summit

The Lyra Taylor Social Work Impact Summit is the AASW’s new national platform for transformative social work. Proudly named after Lyra Taylor, each summit will honour her legacy of perseverance, innovation and an unwavering dedication to social justice.

A founding member of the AASW, Taylor was instrumental in shaping social work practices in Australia through her work in policy reform and advocacy. Her contributions to the Commonwealth Department of Social Services in 1944 established progressive community-driven practices. Read more about Lyra Taylor here.

Beyond response: proactive social work in family violence

As we approach the AASW’s 80th anniversary, this inaugural summit – Beyond response: proactive social work in family violence – will bring together social workers, policymakers, advocates, researchers, and community voices to address one of Australia’s most urgent issues: family and domestic violence.

One in five Australian adults has experienced physical or sexual family violence, with women and children disproportionally affected. We need urgent reform that is not reactive, but preventative and grounded in social justice. The Lyra Taylor Social Work Impact Summit is an opportunity to lead a national conversation on preventing family and domestic violence.

Government and peak body voices

To shape the first Lyra Taylor Social Work Impact Summit, the AASW has formed a special advisory group of leaders from social work, government, policy, and community sectors. This group has helped create a bold, inclusive agenda, recommend key speakers, and ensured the summit reflects Lyra Taylor’s legacy in advancing the social work profession.
