- Social Worker Spotlight – Bessie Antone
Bessie Antone is a social worker dedicated to supporting children who have experienced trauma and strengthening the relationships that help them heal. In her role at Insight Therapies Counselling and Consultancy, she works alongside children and families to build safety, resilience and connection during the early years when support can make the greatest difference.
“I believe childhood is where meaningful change begins and where the foundation of wellbeing is built,” Bessie says. “Early experiences shape how children see themselves and their world.” Her commitment to early intervention and relational practice has guided her career across child and family focused roles, including intensive case management within child protection.
Through this work, Bessie witnessed firsthand how trauma and disrupted attachment can affect a child’s development. “Healing happens through relationships,” she explains. “With the right support, children and families can thrive.” These experiences led her to further specialise in trauma informed and attachment focused approaches, which now underpin her therapeutic work.
At Insight Therapies Counselling and Consultancy, Bessie provides direct support to children as well as guidance and education for parents and carers. “I use evidence informed, trauma aware approaches that focus on building safety, trust and connection,” she says. She describes the impact of early intervention as transformative. “When a child begins to feel safe, understood and supported, it often ripples through the family system.”
Working with children who have experienced trauma can be emotionally demanding. “One of the biggest challenges is holding space for the complexity of children’s and families’ experiences,” Bessie reflects. Many of the families she supports have faced neglect, disrupted attachments or systemic pressures that compound stress. At the same time, she finds the rewards profound. “Witnessing children regain trust, develop confidence and build secure relationships is incredibly fulfilling,” she says. “Small moments, like a child sharing their emotions or a family connecting in new ways, remind me why this work is so important.”
Bessie is particularly aware of the barriers many families face in accessing timely and affordable support. “Systemic pressures such as funding limitations, service gaps and long waitlists can prevent families from accessing the help they need,” she explains. She sees early, consistent intervention as critical to preventing ongoing cycles of disadvantage and trauma.
Reflective practice and supervision are central to sustaining her work. “Reflective practice and supervision are essential to ethical, effective social work,” she says. “They allow me to stay self aware, process complex emotions and ensure my practice remains aligned with social work values.”
Looking ahead, Bessie hopes to continue deepening her expertise in trauma informed and attachment focused interventions, including focused psychological strategies such as Theraplay, Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy and Cognitive Behavioural Play Therapy. “I believe relational, trauma informed approaches are essential, evidence based social work strategies that prevent harm and support resilience across communities,” she says.
For Bessie, the heart of social work remains simple and powerful. “Every child deserves the opportunity to feel safe, supported and empowered,” she says. “Social work is about walking alongside people with empathy, curiosity and respect, using every interaction as an opportunity to foster hope and positive change.”
