The AASW congratulates our 2025 National Excellence Award winners for their outstanding contributions to social work.

Social Work Student of the Year

Lisa White

Lisa is an outstanding member of the i.help.u team whose dedication, empathy, and professionalism truly set her apart. From her first day as a support coordinator, Lisa has consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to improving the lives of the people she supports. Her transition into the role of social work student was seamless, marked by a natural ability to connect, advocate, and empower. Lisa approaches every challenge with compassion and a solutions-focused mindset, always putting the needs of participants and their families at the forefront.

Senior Social Work Researcher of the Year

Dr Zalia Powell

Dr Zalia Powell, Senior Lecturer at the University of the Sunshine Coast, is a researcher of national and international standing whose work has demonstrable impact on education, policy, and practice. Her innovative use of photovoice and other participatory methods amplifies marginalised voices and strengthens the social work evidence base. She has a sustained record of scholarly output, mentorship, and leadership, with clear future potential to continue shaping the field. Her contributions during the past year reflect excellence across impact, significance, leadership, and overall contribution.

Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Social Worker of the Year

Yaleela Torrens

Yaleela Torrens is a Gooreng Gooreng & Bundjalung Accredited Mental Health Social Worker based in Gladstone, Central Queensland. Yaleela has spearheaded her own social work practice and has successfully forged her practice from a small coastal town to a national practice, where she specialises in clinical supervision, Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) and trauma-therapy for Indigenous and non-Indigenous organisations, companies and individuals.

Social Worker of the Year

Michael Elwan

Michael Elwan is an Accredited Social Worker, counsellor, consultant, and PhD candidate who has lived in Australia for only ten years after migrating from Egypt. Drawing on his lived experience of caregiving, cultural displacement, and suicide loss, Michael founded Lived Experience Solutions (LEXs), providing counselling, training, and consultancy nationally. He is a Board Member of AHPRA, Writer-in Residence with the ALIVE Centre, and serves on multiple state and national advisory groups in suicide prevention and mental health. A recognised public speaker and award finalist, Michael exemplifies the profession’s values by integrating cultural humility, innovation, and leadership into every aspect of practice.
