AASW's Facilitating Group Supervision virtual workshop series is designed to provide participants with key skills and knowledge for effective group facilitation. Through interactive workshops, participants will develop a solid understanding of group supervision and its role in supporting professional growth. The workshops will encourage critical self-reflection, helping participants to assess their own experiences and development.
Participants will learn practical strategies for creating a safe and supportive environment, managing group dynamics, and facilitating open, constructive discussions. Additionally, the workshops will cover techniques for confidently navigating conflict and resolving issues, ensuring a positive and collaborative group experience.
Pre-work and self-reflection (1 hour)
Participants are required to complete readings and self-reflections in preparation for the workshops.
Workshop 1 (3.5 hours) - 22 September 2026 10.00am-1.30pm AEST
This interactive workshop will focus on laying the foundation for effective group supervision. We’ll start by exploring the core principles of group supervision and its importance in supporting growth and development within teams. Participants will engage in hands-on activities designed to help you prepare for working with your group, including strategies for building trust, creating a safe space, and setting clear expectations.
You'll also have the opportunity to reflect on your role as a facilitator and how to foster meaningful conversations in a group setting. Through guided reflection exercises, we’ll delve into real-world scenarios, helping you apply key concepts to your specific context. By the end of the workshop, you’ll have a solid understanding of how to prepare the groundwork for leading a group and build confidence in your journey as a group supervisor.
Workshop 2 (3.5 hours) - 29 September 2026 10.00am-1.30pm AEST
This interactive workshop will focus on developing the key skills required for successful group supervision. We’ll explore common ethical challenges that arise in group settings and how to navigate these situations with confidence and professionalism. Through case studies and group discussions, participants will engage in real-world problem-solving to better understand the complexities of maintaining ethical standards while fostering open dialogue within a group.
The workshop will also cover the essential competencies of an effective group supervisor, including communication techniques, conflict resolution, and strategies for encouraging meaningful participation from all group members.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll have the tools and confidence to apply these competencies in your practice, and we’ll conclude by discussing your way forward—how to continue refining your skills and grow as a group supervisor. This workshop is designed to be highly interactive, giving you plenty of opportunities to reflect, practice, and plan your next steps.
